Former NBA player and ESPN broadcaster Jalen Rose said men should spend aAt least $100. Not surprisingly, Rose's comments sparked many conversations among hairstylists and clients alike.

"I try not to criticize barbers who charge such amounts, but we don't charge that in my shop," Smith said.
Rose's comments sparked discussion about fair pricing, appreciation of the work of people in the service industry, and the unique, almost sacred, relationship between hairdressers and clients in the black community.
Smith, 52, said there are many reasons he's kept haircut prices reasonable. The main reason is that the hair would grow back quickly and would discourage many customers from coming back.
"There are a lot of single moms trying to make ends meet, and we don't want to put an extra financial burden on them, so we keep our prices between $20 and $30," she said.
While Smith has cut the hair of many prominent athletes and entertainers who live in or visit the city, he said he doesn't believe in raising prices just because someone has a big bank account.
"I don't do business that way. I'm not charging you more for playing or being with the Milwaukee BucksShaqÖreggie mueller. I've never done that before," Smith said.

Rose played in the NBA for 13 years and was a successful sports analyst for ABC, ESPN, NBA Countdown andStand up!. He is reported to have a net worth of $50 million, so his comment might be a bit off.
"Everyone knows Jalen cut Rose," said Richard Armstead, a barber for Gee's Clippers who has been cutting hair since he was 11.
Armstead, 49, said that while $100 is a lot to ask for one customer, he notes that prices have not kept pace.
"When I cut my hair near the Mall of America in Minnesota in 1994, I was making $20 for a haircut, while in Milwaukee, haircuts cost about $13 for an adult and $8 for a child," Armstead said. "And that was 29 years ago."

For the past five years, the store has been showing “Real men, real talk” Meeting led by the spoken word artist and authorKwabena Antoine Nixon, where young and old grapple with issues of fatherhood; Poll; mental and physical health; healthy relationships; Employment and problems that arise locally and nationally.
No subject is taboo. The most important part of conversations is for men to learn that they are not alone. I have attended several and they are informative and offer tutoring.
I haven't climbed into a barber's chair for putting my hair up in years, but I can tell you that the barbershop is a sacred place and the bond between a barber and a client is special.
The Black Barbershop is as important to the Black community as the Black Church and Black Press because secrets are shared and information is shared. It brings people together and has a positive impact on the livelihood of community members.
When I was a kid, the hair salon was where my dad would take me to meet his friends; learn to play chess; and where he would learn about sports from all the debates about who was the better basketball and football player.
Sometimes the barbershop is just a place where men can take off their masks, relax and just talk to men about life.
"Men, especially black men, are under a lot of stress and the hair salon is a place to take that out," Smith said.
Haircut is a way for men to pamper themselves
Loujefe Bolden, 38, said a new haircut improved his mood and made him more productive.bold font, a hip-hop artist, got a haircut and shave line from his longtime hairstylist, Richard Armstead. Bolden said Armstead had been his barber for the past 12 years.
"I just had Richard cut off my head because he's doing a good job. I mean, I'm not very good at cutting," Bolden said.
bold fontShe pays $55 for her clothes but says she only goes to the store once or twice a month.
"I would pay $100 if I could afford it because it's more than just a haircut. It's the feeling you have. You get up from the chair with renewed energy. People compliment you and you feel good. A haircut is one of the best ways for a man to pamper himself," he said.
Armstead said raising prices would force some of his customers to go elsewhere or not go as often.
Smith said he hasn't increased prices at Gee's Clippers in 10 years because of the changing customer base. More and more women are bringing their children with them and many do not have the income to pay for a weekly or fortnightly haircut.
Smith receives weekly calls from moms, aunts, and grandmothers looking for a haircut for their son or grandson.
He tries to accommodate everyone's wishes, and the store often offers free patterns for kids in school, good grades, or over the summer.
"We're trying to do our part because we're part of the community and you never know how someone might benefit from this haircut in the future," Smith said.
Men demand more from their barber
Anthony Daniels,a former Milwaukeean, who now resides in Georgia, has been cutting hair in the Atlanta area for over a decade.
Daniels said barbers aren't getting paid the way they should be paid, so he'd like to see haircut prices go up.
Daniels charges teens $20 for a haircut and men $35 to $40.
"I give free haircuts to kids under the age of four," he said.
Daniels said Rose, who has flawless hair, pays $100 because her hairstylist does many touch-ups, like adding fibers to make it look thicker, sprays, some pencil to give a more defined line, and some coloring.
Rose, who admitted to going to the field with her barber to get her hair cut, said somade his statement to defend barbers, beauticians and others in the service industry whose work is often taken for granted.
“His cut is not a natural cut. You're not going to get your hair cut and go play basketball for an hour. His haircut is made for TV. It's art," Daniels said.
Don't be surprised to hear that former athletes are paying $100 and even $200 to increase their out-of-court success on sports shows or commercials.
Over the past 10 years, Daniels says, the influence of hip-hop has caused men to demand more from their barber than the traditional bald headGummy haircut made popular by R&B singer Bobby Brown.
"You can go bald if you walk into a store and walk out in a few hours with dreadlocks. It costs,” he said.
Hairdressers today are artists and while prices may not have kept pace with customer demands, the hair salon holds a special place, especially in the black community, as it is a safe place for men to speak freely and be vulnerable can and cannot be localized. a dollar value of this unique social function.
But you can tip your barber, I'm sure he'll appreciate it.
